Raleigh NC is the state capital of North Carolina, and has the distinction of being the 2ndbiggest city in this US state. It was named in honor of Sir Walter Raleigh who among other achievements, went down history books as the founder of the lost Roanoke Colony. This city is home to the North Carolina University and is part of the famous Research Triangle region along with the cities of Durham and Chapel Hill. A big part of Raleigh is situated in Wake County, while a smaller portion extends to Durham County. 
 
According to the United States census estimates of 2015, this North Carolina city’s population stood at 451,066.  It is highly noted for being numbered among some of the fastest growing cities in the nation. As of 2016, Caucasians were the largest demographical block in Raleigh, and represented 57.5% of the city’s entire population. The City of Raleigh is universally known under the nickname of the ‘City of Oaks.’ This epithet stems from the numerous oak trees that dot the streets of the city center.

Raleigh has a diversified religion outlook, but the predominant religion here is Christianity.  In this context, Roman Catholics are the most prevalent practitioners. Additionally, in 2011, Businessweek.com ranked Raleigh at the top position in its ‘America’s Best Places to Live’ list. Lastly KPMG ranked Raleigh at #5 of its ‘Most Cost Attractive Business Locations’ 2012 list.
 
Sports 
Raleigh’s claim to fame when it comes to professional sports is, without doubt, the Carolina Hurricanes. This is a National Hockey League side, which established itself in the city in 1997, and whose home arena is the PNC Arena. The Hurricanes are distinguished as the only major league pro sports team to have clinched a championship from this region. They bagged the 2006 Stanley Cup. The city also hosted the NHL All-Star Game in the year 2011.

History ​

​This city is one of the earliest in the United States to be planned right from the start. During the American War of Independence, specifically in the year 1788, the land on which it was laid out was picked to be the site of the new North Carolina state capital. It was at first laid out in a ‘grid-like’ pattern that had the state capitol at the center. Over the course of the American Civil War, Raleigh was spared from being a significant battleground, even after it seceded from the Union.
